My Op-Ed was published!

I decided to push through my fears and write the op-ed and I’m so excited to announce that it ran in today’s paper!  No matter what else happens during the course of this challenge, I feel good knowing I will be able to look back and say that I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and took tangible steps (no matter how small) to improve my community.  I’ve said it a thousand times already and will likely say it a thousand more: it never ceases to amaze me how much biking has changed me and my life in general.

I have mixed feelings about the fact that my blog wasn’t mentioned (I had included it in a byline).  I’m relieved not to have any hateful commenters driven to my site, but then again I would have liked for people in the area to know more about going car-lite in Central Florida.

Anyways, here it is – let me know what you think!

New Year, New Question

Wow, I guess I wasn’t kidding about being a mama bear because I’ve seriously been in hibernation mode over the last few weeks!  We had a very merry (and bikey!) Christmas and enjoyed a full two-week vacation together.  Santa made Vivi her very own little fixie-styled balance bike and mama got a new bike, too!  Yay – can’t wait to get some pictures up once Red Rider is back from her check-up.

I spent a great deal of time over the break thinking about this challenge.  Though we are only two months in, it’s becoming fairly obvious that we’ve already answered the question we set out to ask: can a family of four in Orlando live on only 4,000 car miles.  Based on our experiences thus far, I think I can pretty confidently say: absolutely.  I think we are a good example of a typical family in the sense that our lives are busy and require a great deal of getting around: we both work full-time, we are active volunteers, kids at two schools, extracurricular activities, etc.  In spite of all this, we’ve been surprised how often we can bike and are discovering new bike possibilities nearly every week. Does it wear off?

I think when people hear about our challenge to live on 4,000 miles, they immediately see it as hindering our way of life–I know I thought it would at first.  It’s true that I have to think a lot more about where I go, but it’s really been interesting to see how often going by bike actually expands our possibilities.  I know I’ve said this before, but it’s still such a surprise! Mama Bear on a Mission

The more I try to get around Orlando by bicycle, the less simple riding a bike becomes.  I’ve enjoyed a great deal of freedom riding my bike–you have to love anything that makes you go “wheeeeeeee!” down a hill on a regular basis.  However, riding has also brought about a great deal of awareness.  It seems that so much, down to how and where you ride, becomes political.  (more…)

Month One Update

I’m happy to report that I have survived the first month of this challenge–yay!  Unfortunately, I still have a lot of room for improvement.  We put a total of 449 miles on the car in the first month; if we keep driving at this rate, we’ll be looking at 5,388 for the year–well above even the 25% goal. Constant Surprises

Jesse and I have yet to figure out a good strategy for the two nights a week that he has class.  Jesse had been driving to and from class each week, which seemed like a waste of miles for such a short time period.  Unfortunately, the trail is a) closed at night and b) kinda spooky.  Neither of us are really comfortable with him riding University home (a busy arterial road with a lot of college-aged traffic), thus the car usage.  This week we tried out a new strategy–I drove to work and Jesse bussed up to my work with the girls.  We did a kiddo and car hand-off and I rode the bus home with the girls while he took the car to class.  It did require quite a lengthy bus ride for the kids, but they didn’t seem to mind.  I’m not sure this is the best strategy; it may work better next semester when Jesse will only have class one night a week. This past Saturday, our dear friend Mme Paulita hosted a party to celebrate her birthday.  Seeing that the party was French-themed (and knowing our friend), we had a feeling there would be a good amount of wine involved in the affair.  Not to sound like a lush, but this brought up concerns about biking to the party.  Though I certainly take driving under the influence very seriously, I would venture to say that biking under the influence might be even more dangerous.  The ride was about 8 miles each way and included riding downtown, where we might encounter other “influenced” drivers.  The other problem with riding is that you can’t just designate a driver (and there was no way I was riding home in the bucket).  So even though I was completely bummed not to bike there (I mean, what’s more French than a bicycle??), we decided busing would be a more practical option. After all, tomorrow is another day!

Alright–I’m going to mix things up a bit.  In a new twist on the Friday the 13th norm, I’m actually going to STOP freaking out.  I’ve spent most of this week kvetching and I’m ready to move on now (I’m sure this is wonderful news to my hubby).

I went out for a nice walk with Viv today and was sort of processing a SWOT analysis in my head.  Yes, my brain does strange things when under stress.  Since it would clearly be a bit too much geekery to actually write out a SWOT, I’ll just list some of my thoughts: (more…)

Sophomore Slump

Yep, I’m already in a slump.  In a slump after working from home nearly all week, no less!  My husband tells me that week two of bike commuting is the hardest.  He says the first week, you’re all jazzed and ready to ride.  By the second week, the shininess has worn off and reality sets in.  He’s probably lying, but I’ll take it.  Actually, it does remind me of having a baby.  Everyone tells you that you won’t ever sleep again and, unless you’ve partaken in some messed-up government experiments, you really don’t understand.  The baby comes and the first week you’re thinking, “Pffft.  This isn’t bad at all!”  You even do crazy things like wake the baby up to make sure she’s okay!  Oh, but then the second week comes and the reality hits you like a ton of bricks.  (more…)

Here we go!

I know, I know – I’ve actually been riding for a couple of days. But I never got around to taking a picture of the odometer (because I was on the bike!), so I didn’t have my “proof” ready. But here it is – the official starting point: 68,588 miles. Anything added on after this goes to our total of 4,000 miles for the entire year. Eeek! I won’t lie – I’m freaking out a bit. (more…)
